**CANCELLED** War, Victory, and Catastrophe: Commemoration in the Soviet Union and Its Successor States

This event has been cancelled due to illness

In discussing Russia鈥檚 celebrations of Victory Day, Western media often contrast the state鈥檚 militaristic, patriotic displays with grassroots forms of commemoration, which subvert the state鈥檚 narrative by focusing on Stalinist terror or the human cost of war. In this talk, Mischa Gabowitsch will show how each commemorative repertoire has historically influenced the other, and how neither could exist alone.
